Challenge #22 - Clean And Simple - Anything Goes

Kathi - DT Member
Hi everyone it's time for this weeks Clean and Simple - Anything Goes Challenge!  We had some very unique projects last week!  The team really enjoys looking at all of the entries every week.  Please see our Challenge Rules to the right on the sidebar.

WHAT IS CAS??????

CAS:  Clean and Simple – is a design style that uses minimal design elements to create visually interesting and stunning designs.  CAS requires thought and a clear cut design point of view.  For many designers, it is the most difficult style because you cannot simply pile it on.   A well thought out CAS design takes into consideration: Space, Focal point and Production.

SPACE:  Just what the name suggests…Open, Clean, Space;  the most important element of CAS design.  Untouched Space will drive the eye to your Focal Point.  Space has to be planned and thought out just like all other design elements. In a cohesive design, open space helps creates a focal point.

FOCAL POINT:  What is the POINT of your project?  What design Point of View are you trying to achieve?  Keep these in mind when working with your image, sentiment, and or grouping.  If the sentiment is the focal, then it should be the STAR of the design.  Embellishments grouped around your sentiment, should not become a distraction.  Your Focal should become MORE and everything else should become LESS.

MASS PRODUCTION: How easily can you create multiple copies of the same card?  How easily can you swap out embellishment, etc. to add uniqueness?  If you had a clear plan for Space and Focal, then Production will be easy.  That wonderful “retro Santa” with flocking, glitter, multiple layers and die cuts may have looked fabulous on your blog, but the “glitter” will definitely rub off the rock by the time you try to make twenty or thirty.  CAS cards are easy to reproduce.

We hope you will have fun with this challenge and we look forward to seeing your projects.  CAS has become my favorite design style, but it remains the BANE of my Creative Existence!

I'm a 34 year old mom and wife from Northern Finland, Europe. I live about 100 miles North of Arctic Circle in a small town called Kittilä (population apx 6000). Kittilä is very active little town and we are famous for our gold mine (biggest in Europe), ski resort Levi (kind of combination of Aspen and Las Vegas) and home of many famous artists, actors and other creative people. So it was very natural for me to do handmade things since I was a little girl.

I have been papercrafting since mid 90's but cardmaking became my main hobby about 7-8 years ago. I've been blogging since 2007, first in finnish blog server and later on I switched to blogger. Papercrafting has become a true passion for me as there are still new things to learn after all this time so you never get bored doing this!

I'm currently also part of Designer Team at P*skis which is a Finnish cardmaking challenge and just finished my DT term at Fiskars Finland. (BTW did you know that Fiskars is a Finnish company and we are very proud of it here?) I'm also a president of Finnish Cardmakers alliance called "Koukussa Kortteihin ry" and working also as a member of the creative staff of Finnish craft magazine "Taika". Now I'm very excited to a part of my very first foreign design team and hopefully I can make Jackson Digital Expressions more known in Finland and Europe! Thanks for making me part of your amazing group - loving it already!
